콜드플레이와 킨의 감성을 넘어선 아름다움..
세상이 동의하는 고독과 외로움의 노래
전작의 프로듀서였던 아론 존슨(Aaron Johnson)과 마이크 플린(Mike Flynn)과 다시 호흡을 나눈 두 번째 앨범은 여전히 선율 중심의 발라드가 주를 이룬다. 프레이가 처음 등장했을 무렵 그들의 사운드 특징을 설명하고자 동원되었던 영국의 콜드플레이나 킨이 점진적으로 또 파격적으로 변주와 실험을 모색하는 동안, 2집을 통해 변화의 국면이 아닌 유지와 확장을 택한 프레이는 첫 싱글 < You Found Me >를 비롯해 < Never Say Never > < Enough For Now > 등 다수가 동의하고 애창할 수 있을 법한 멜로디 집약 트랙을 다량으로 쏟아내고 있다. 그들에게 절제는 없다. 함께 슬퍼하고 함께 위안할 만한 애타는 순간만이 앨범을 채우고 있을 뿐이다.
현지의 한 평론가는 이들의 노래 안에는 ‘소울’이 담겨있다고 평가하기도 한다. 브릿팝과 모던록의 전통적인 특징을 적절하게 섞어 노래하는 프레이는 음악의 성격상 1990년대 등장했던 수많은 얼터너티브 밴드와 닮은 구석이 많지만, 이에 변별력을 부여하는 힘은 블루스와 소울의 인상을 반영하려는 시도에서 나온다고 관찰한다. 아울러 밴드의 또다른 구심점은 대체로 강하게 연주하는 건반에 있다. 그들의 피아노는 노래가 표현하고자 하는 감정의 추이를 따라 울기도 하고 달리기도 한다. 프레이는 피아노의 원래 맑은 소리를 가지고 결국 밝지는 않은 특별한 소리로 완성한다.
